Some people refer to Congress as the "Broken Branch" because it has not formulated and enacted a lot of public policy over the last few years. It also suffers from record low public approval according to most polling. Some point to the increased usage of the filibuster and an inability of congressional Democrats and Republicans to find compromise on public policy as the cause of a lot of the public anger at Congress. What recommendations do you have for improving Congress and the policymaking process?
In my views, the primary reason behind the deteriorating popularity of Congress and the new policies launched is that the law makers are not developing policies from the perspective of a common man. For any policy to be effective, it must be developed with the perspective and disposition of the people who will be using it for their benefit. The ground level reality of such policies will get increased drastically when the policies are made by keeping the needs and requirements of the common man on priority. Similar is the case with Congress. Congress must keep ears to the ground and have an understanding about the daily struggles of a common man. Then they will have an understanding of what are the real requirements of the overall society and accordingly they can come with policies for the general benefit of all.
