American Cinema was in its infancy during the 1890s. It was a period of various cinematographical and technological developments. It started off by the use of a patented camera by Wordsworth Donisthorpe and WC Crofts in their film "London's Trafalgar Square". During this era, the motion picture technology was quite primitive and was experiencing an early stage of development. Efforts were made to make the motion picture more fluidic and seamless in its play. It was also followed by the work of William K.L Dickson on a motion-picture camera and a viewing machine called the Kinetoscope.

In 1892, The Eastman Company become the Eastman Kodak Company, which is a monumental event in the development of cinema. There were also developments in projectors and Vitascopes that formed the major developmental aspects of this phase. During the earlier periods, American Cinema started with playing extremely short motion picture films that were played on the reel. Certain movies in the era paved the path for the grandiosity that the one would behold in the American Cinema during the later decades.
