Introduction : Surgical care is a group of measures that are expected to be completed by health care professionals to improve patient outcomes after surgery,

Definition : Surgical care covers those intervention that are critical for specific conditions in preventing premature death and disability,

Importance of surgical care : Surgical care is essential since surgery can successful treat a wide variety of conditions from cancer and injuries to obstructed labour ,however 5 billion people do not currently have access to safe timely and affordable surgical care and anaesthesia world wide 9 out of 10 people cannot access even the most basis surgical services,

Surgical Care includes following:

1) Pre-Operative Care:

Pre-operative care refers to health care provided before a surgical operation ,the aim of preoperative care is to do whatever is right to increase the success of the surgery,

At some point before the operation the health care provider will assess the fitness of the person to have surgery,this assessment should include whatever tests are indicated,but not include screening for conditions without an indication,

Immediately before surgery the patient's body is prepared ,perhaps by washing with an antiseptic ,and whenever possible their anxiety is addressed to make them comfortable,

2) Check list for surgery : Consent forms /insurance information,

3) Getting ready for surgery : On the day of surgery ,Patient will meet with the medical team involved in patient surgery ,this will include patient surgeon,the anesthesiologist ,an operating room nurse,and various other healthcare professionals,

4) Intra-Operative care :

Types of Anesthesis : During surgery ,patient will be given some form of anesthesis ,which are medicines given to relieve pain and sensation during surgery,before surgery ,patient will meet with the physician anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist ,the anesthesiologist will review patient medical condition and history to plan the appropriate anesthetic for surgery,

There are various forms of anesthesia ,the type of anesthesia patient get will depend on the type of surgery and medical condition,Sedative "to make patient sleepy" and analgesics "to ease the pain" may also be used as part of the anesthesis process,

5) Post-Operative Care:

After Surgery discomforts and complications :- The amount of discomfort following surgery depends on many things,including the type of surgery performed ,

Typical discomforts may include : a) Nausea and vomiting from general anesthesis ,b) Sore throat ( Caused by the tube placed in the windpipe for breathing during surgery,

6) Intensive Care : Sometimes a patient is transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) for further close monitoring ,intensive care is most often needed for patient on mechanical ventilation for patient recovering from heart attacks or major surgery ,for patients in shock,and for patients with acute renal failure ,in intensive care clinical staff closely watch the patient minute by minute.
