Trends in Cancer

Cancer is a set of disorders caused by the unregulated proliferation of cells. It can be caused due to genetic reasons or acquired lifestyle habits. There are more than 100 different types of cancers have been described until now. Cell proliferation is a highly controlled process under physiological conditions. The unregulated proliferation of cells in cancer leads to the formation of lumps of cells known as tumors. There are two types of tumors. If the cells in this tumor do not migrate to other locations in the body, they are termed as benign tumors. These tumors are less harmful. In the second type, the tumor cells migrate to other parts of the body via blood and establish tumors at the site of their attachment. These tumors are termed as malignant tumors. These tumors often result in the malfunction of the affected organ.

There is no permanent cure for the terminal stage patients affected with cancer. The treatment often includes the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Scientists have explored the use of millions of natural and synthetic chemical compounds in an effort to identify anti-cancer agents that would kill only the cancer cells without affecting normal cells. The survival rate depends on the type of cancer and at which stage the patient started treatment. The invention of CT scanning and its introduction allowed the doctors to assess the location and severity of cancer.
