Question

In order to provide a steady flow of water to small plants in your garden, you have decided to build a DIY homemade watering system. You have your watering sytem by taking several 5 gallon buckets and drilled a 1/8" hole at the very bottom of each bucket. In this way, water will use gravity to flow out when watering your plant.

The cheapest and convenient bucket you found at a convenient store has a shape of a truncated cone as shown below. Assume the given dimensions represent internal diameters and are in units of inches.

01 2.00 08.00

Assume the following:

A hose is running in the bucket and the water level remains the same (full) throughout the watering process.

There is no head loss (HL) in the system.

You may have to review some old formulas for volume...

Q1: What is the "jet velocity" of the fluid just outside of the hole when the bucket is at its fullest point? Your units should be in feet per second, but do not type in your units here. Round to 2 decimal places

Q2: Determine the flow rate coming out of the hole in units of gallons per minute when the bucket is at its fullest point. Do not type in your units and round your answer to 2 decimal place.

Q3: How many bucket-fulls of water would come out of the 1/8" hole in the course of 1 hour? Your units should be in "buckets of water" but do not type in your units. Round your answer to the nearest integer (no decimal place).

Q4:  After all these calculations, my plants were still not getting enough water because one hole was too small to flow water through the entire surface of the plant. I decided to regulate the flow rate to the plant to 3 gallons per minute by drilling more holes on the bottom surface of the bucket.

How many total number of holes (1/8") do I need at the bottom of the bucket to have the 3 gallons per minutes flow?

Give your answer in number of holes and do not type the unit. Round your answer to the nearest integer.

L 2. Steady statemass balance: Water is flowing at steady state in a 0.1 meter-diameter pipe with a maximum velocity (turbulent profile) of 0.3 meters/sec. The pipe then goes through an expansion, to where it is then flowing in a 0.5 meter-diameter pipe, and the flow regime has changed from turbulent to laminar. In the second section of pipe, calculate the velocity as (a) block flow profile (Vavg), and (b) maximum velocity in laminar flow profile? HINT: you will need...
