Question

1. A reactor system consists of a series arrangement of a plug flow reactor and a mixed flow rector (continuous stirred tank reactor). The mixed flow reactor has 10 times the volume of the plug flow reactor. Assume the rate equation for the reaction that occurs is given by: r = 2.4 C2 where c is the concentration of the reacting species. The reaction occurs to 96% conversion. The inlet concentration of C is Cao1. You may assume the density if the system is constant. (a) Is the total residence time different if the plug flow reactor is first or second in the series? (b) If the plug flow reactor is first, write an equation that will enable you to solve for the residence time in the plug flow reactor. You do not need to solve the equation

You are designing a plug flow reactor that uses chlorine to destroy pathogens in water. You want to reduce the pathogen concentration from 100 pathogens/L to below 1 pathogen/L through a first-order decay process with the constant decay rate of k = 0.15/ min. You plan on treating water at a rate of 1,000 gal/min. (a) What is the minimum contact time you need to achieve this reduction (in minutes)? And what is the minimum volume (in gallons) of the...

Problem 3: Engineers suspect that soybeans keep getting stuck in the plug flow reactor for a much longer time than expected. A step change injection using a fluorescent dye was used to experimentally confirm this fact as well as the residence time distribution of the reactor. Draw a set of axis and plot the concentration of fluorescent dye versus time at the reactor inlet and at the reactor outlet.

A stirred tank flow reactor is operating in continuous mode (shown below), and an exothermic (heat generating) chemical reaction is taking place inside the reactor. The control objective is to maintain the concentration of product at a desired value (set point). The conversion of chemical reaction is highly dependent on the reaction temperature. To maintain the reaction temperature at the desired value, a cooling water jacket is used for the reactor. The major input disturbance is fluctuation in the temperature...

Continuously operated stirred tank reactor has been design on the assumption of perfect mixing to achieve 90% conversion of the first order reaction. Subsequent flow patterns study (flow visualization and RTD measurements) indicate that: (i) 65% of the volume is well mixed, (ii) 20%, of the volume locally exhibits plug flow (ii) 15% volume is inactive and 25% of the feed bypass the reactor. The conversion to be expected from this reactor is to be estimated. Design: У, САЗ-0.1 САО...

    3. Three CSTR's are to be used in series. The second reactor has a volume twice that of the first and third reactors. The influent flow has a concentration of 150 mg/l of species A at 100 gal/min. The rate constant for the second order reaction is 0.007 l/mg-h. What is the mean residence time and volume in each reactor if 80% of A is converted in each reactor?
