There are key five characteristics of self-concept. They are physical concept, emotional concept, social concept, mental concept and spiritual concept. Out of these let’s choose the following four.

  1. Emotional concept: Emotions provide us with our reaction to others’ actions and activities. As a result of this, we need to be mindful of our emotions. It should not become extreme at work place.
  2. Social concept: We need to realize that we are social creatures and our activities mainly are interactive and thus we need to find mutually beneficial solutions.
  3. Mental concept: Our mind is sentient and thus we have moral and ethical responsibilities. In the work place we need to careful of our mental decision making process.
  4. Spiritual concept: The spiritual concept is more of a philosophical and devotional component. It sometimes forms our moral compass and guides us through our daily actions.

These self-concepts are something that we as individuals need to be aware of in order to be more efficient and effective at work place.

The case points out an issue of conflict between the different department heads. The conversation seemed to have become competitive in nature. In order to create a respectful and communicative environment in the office meeting we need to

  • Set the tone for the meeting: we need to make sure that the participants know that we are in the meeting to solve the problem with collective effort and not through a competitive discussion.
  • Train people on communication skills: we need to make sure that participants avoid direct name calling and blame game in the meeting
  • Be clear on meeting agenda: before others begin to speak (and begins blaming one another), we need to make sure that we all know the expected outcome of the meeting.
  • Garner empathy in the meeting: at the meeting, we encourage others to empathize with their counterparts and put themselves in others’ shoes to understand the gravity of the matter.
