Question 8

Starting with activation of receptors, what is the correct path visual information takes to travel from the retina to the primary visual cortex?

Answer:- Rods, bipolar cells, retinal ganglion cells, optic nerve, optic tract, lateral geniculate nucleus

Explanation:- Light rays activates the receptors that are rods and cones present in the back of the retina and is transduced into a neuronal signal which is processed first by the bipolar cells , then horizontal, amacrine, and retinal ganglion cells. The ganglion cell axons form the optic nerve which exits the eye through the optic disk. The nasal halves of the optic nerve cross over at the optic chiasma through optic tract and terminate in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus. These lateral geniculate nucleus cells send their axons via the optic radiations to the occipital lobe, where further processing occurs.
