Immanuel Kant is one of the most important Western philosophers who gifted the world with the deontological or duty ethics along with the categorical imperatives. Kant’s theory is based on duty and not on the consequence. It suggests that an act would be considered ethical if it fulfills duty without worrying about the consequences. This would mean one shouldn’t deviate from one’s duty no matter what the consequence is. Kant’s duty ethics has played a major role in government agencies, especially the military field where people are expected to follow the rules and fulfil their duties.

Another great contribution of Kant is categorical imperatives. The first imperative suggests that one should always act to a maxim which would become a universal law which others would follow. This would mean that that people should always stick to the moral standards that would be accepted by everyone. Second imperative suggests that one shouldn’t use others as a means to achieve the ends but as an end in themselves. This would mean people shouldn’t use others to achieve their selfish needs. Finally, he suggests that people have free will and independent decision-making skills that needs to respected. Thus, respecting the autonomy of individuals is very important. Others shouldn’t decide for themselves because it would be violating their rights.
