3. Imagine that the average self-efficacy scores in the population is 60 (out of 100) with a standard deviation of 5.

Use this information to answer the following questions:

a. What percentage of individuals falls between the mean and a self-efficacy score of 67.5? (Hint: Calculate the z-score first and look in the table for the probability. Make sure to draw the distribution to see what column you need to look at!).

b. A researcher wants to be able to screen children for low self-efficacy. In order to do that, she wants to find the lowest 20% of the distribution. What self-efficacy score is the cutoff for the lowest 20% of the distribution?

For a certain law school, the entering students have an average LSAT score of about 700 with a standard deviation of about 40. The smoothed density histogram of the LSAT scores appears to follow a normal distribution. Sketch a smoothed density histogram (a bell-shaped curve) of the distributions for the LSAT scores. (For this problem, draw this on your own paper. You will not need to submit this graph.) Because this distribution is approximately normal, the mean is equal to...

In 2004, the FDA released a report suggesting that a particular class of antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIS) may increase the risk of "suicidality" in adolescents. The concern led to a black box warning on SSRIS and other antidepressants for users younger than 25. The issue spurred a debate in the psychiatric research community concerning the core issue of whether suicidality, a measure of suicidal tendencies, accurately represents how likely an adolescent is to commit suicide. The reason...
