The output of those plants is elec- tricity, and this nuclear-generated electricity represents 20% of U.S. electrical energy. Use these facts to deter. mine the fraction of the total U.S. energy supply that is in the form of electricity. 3。40% FIGURE 2.6 Sources of energy in the mid- 2010s, shown as percentages (a) Some 82% of U.S. energy comes from fossil fuels. Answer #1

Fact 1: 8% of the Total US Energy comes from the nuclear power plants.

\frac{Total\ US\ Energy\times 8}{100}=Nuclear\ Energy

Total\ US\ Energy=\frac{Nuclear\ Energy\times 100}{8}

Fact 2: 20% of the Total US Electricity comes from the nuclear power plants.

\frac{Total\ US\ Electricity\times 20}{100}=Nuclear\ Electricity

Nuclear Electricity × 100 0 Total US Electricity

Now,

The fraction of Total US Energy supply that is in the form of electricity.

Total US Electricity Fraction Total US Energy × 100%

Fraction=\frac{100\times Nuclear\ Electricity\times 8}{20\times100\times Nuclear\ Energy}\times 100\%

Nuclear Energy is Nuclear Electricity. So,

Fraction=\frac{8}{20}\times 100\%=40\%
