Cell Biology Experiment. Calculating the Percent Mutagenesis and Percent Survival of D7 Yeast Strain provided in a Liquid Culture of Yeast-Peptone-Dextrose (YEPD) Medium. The experiment calls for a serial dilution of a starting cell concentration (of Yeast, Starting Concentration for Trial 1 is 3.28 x 10^7 cell/mL) that begins with 100 MicroLiters of D7 Yeast and 900 MicroLiters of YEPD. Once put into the 1st tube, concentration is now at 3.28 x 10^6 cells/mL, this is continued until the Final Concentration is at 4 x 10^3 cells/mL. This serial diluted concentration is then extracted (100 MicroLiters) and is added to 3 Plates, Experimental Control Plate (contains 100 MicroLiters of 4 x 10^3 cells/mL serial diluted cells and 100 MicroLiters of 27 mM of Tumeric). Positive Control Plate (contains 100 MicroLiters of 4 x 10^3 cells/mL serial diluted cells). The Positive Control Plate placed in UV Crosslinker w/ dosage of 20,000 MicroJ/cm^2 of UV Radiation. The Negative Control Plate contain the same concentration of cells and 100 MicroLiters of Ethanol. Each Plate was then placed in a Shaking Incubator set at 30 Celcius for 2.5 days. After completion, we calculated the Percent Mutagenesis and Percent Survival for the Experimental and Positive Control Plates only. Trial 2 called for the same process, EXCEPT the Starting Concentration of the D7 Yeast was 3.25 x 10^7 cells/mL.

The question I have is about the Report I have to write for the experiment. The Lab Professor said "You are to use a T-Test for statistical analysis OR an ANOVA Test. Which method you use is to be determined by yourself, but it is up to you to determine the CORRECT statistical analysis test used. There is a CORRECT and an INCORRECT test to use so you have to figure out which one is correct on your own.

Which Statistical Test Method should I use? T-Test or ANOVA Test?

Answer #1

ANOVA is the better solution for this problem. The t test focuses on any two parameters and that too if they are comparitive this amount of data can only be processed by ANOVA.

A haploid strain of yeast is treated with a mutagen called EMS. The different steps in the treatment and the analysis are the following: Step 1: Two tubes, labeled A and B contain 0.2 ml each of same yeast liquid culture. The concentration of yeast cells in the liquid culture was determined by a measure of the turbidity of the culture. This concentration is 4.4 x 109 cells/ml. Step 2: In each tube (A and B) 1.5 ml of phosphate...

A group of students in an organic chemistry course performed a lab experiment in which they synthesized a colorful compound from not-especially-colorful starting materials. This synthesis required 3mol of the starting material, with formula C8H10NBr, for every mole of product desired; and the group started with 5.0g of starting material (all other reagents in excess). At the conclusion of their reaction, they had 8.0mL of solution, intensely colored due to the presence of their product. The concentration of colorful compounds...
