43 Exp 6: Liquid-Liquid Extraction Week 2 Objective The purpose of this experiment is to apply what youve leaned about liquid/liquid separations to the analysis of a simulated mixture of Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV, aka Bath Salts) and an unknown cutting agent. Your goal is to separate the cutting agent from the drug. You will also need to test the compound purities. Acid/base extraction is one of the more difficult principles in organic chemistry to understand. The most straight-forward approach to understanding this subject is to create a flow chart (mentally or on paper) to follow which species has been created and where the molecule resides. If you can imagine the molecule changing and moving to the appropriate layer, you will be able to complete the unknown separation very easily o Cr MDPV DHICI salt) Figure 1: Chemical structure of MDPV and its HCl salt The cutting agent is either Acetylsalicylic Acid or Benzophenone. You will be assigned your mixture once the prelab is completed. It is up to you to design the experiment but you should consider the procedures given in extraction 1 and extraction 2 labs. Chemicals and supplies: The drug mixture, hexane, 1M NaOH(aq), 1M HCl(aq), DI water, MgSO, and filter paper. Standard lab equipment.
