Answer:
1) On researching "google" using google, one comes across the first two non-Google, non-Wiki, non Facebook websites in terms of the apple itunes stores where the google app for mobile is given for download and the economic times link with news pertaining to google. Actually these hits werent "first displayed" - the most relevant first hits were google's own products being mentioned on its search which is almost the first 2 pages. On the third page, these websites appeared.
Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors. One important factor is algorithm called PageRank for determing the order of appearance of websites when the user searches for a topic. According to Google, PageRank works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. The underlying assumption is that more important websites are likely to receive more links from other websites.
2) According to google,
AdWords program enables you to create advertisements which will appear on relevant Google search results pages and our network of partner sites. AdSense program differs in that it delivers Google AdWords ads to individuals' websites. Google then pays web publishers for the ads displayed on their site based on user clicks on ads or on ad impressions, depending on the type of ad.
Example:
AdWords: You search for Reebok shoes. Reebok creates display ad with the searches and eventually you click on a page in the list.
AdSense: Reebok Ads runs on that page, and the owner of the page is paid an amount per month for the number of clicks he gets on the ad.
Thus, adsense if for Ad space sellers, one can earn some money by selling space on your blog/website and Adwords is for Ad space buyers, one pays for showing their ad.
