A new kind of balloon is designed to be a perfect cube in shape, no matter how full. Suppose of these balloons can be stretched to a maximum surface area of 1435 cm2. The balloon is filled with 2.87 L of helium gas at a pressure of 746 torr and a temperature of 298 K. The balloon is then allowed to rise in the atmosphere. If the atmospheric temperature is 260 K, at what pressure will the balloon burst? Suppose one of these balloons was filled with hydrogen gas instead, to maximum capacity at STP (273 K). How much heat is generated (in kJ) if the balloon is combusted by the following reaction? By how many degrees can you heat 2 L of water supposing you can harness all the balloon’s heat energy?

Helium-filled balloons are used to carry scientific instruments high into the atmosphere. Suppose a balloon is launched when the temperature is 22.5 °C, and the barometric pressure is 751 mm Hg. If the balloon’s volume is 4.34×104 L (and no helium escapes from the balloon), what will the volume be at a height of 20 miles, where the pressure is 76.0 mm Hg, and the temperature is -33.0 °C

Fun with a helium balloon A loosely filled balloon contains 4.5 liters of helium gas at atmospheric pressure (PA = 101 kPa) and room temperature T = 20 C. The gas in the balloon is then heated to body temperature, 37 C, by a student. (a) The pressure inside the balloon changes very little during the heating process.
