When considering blood transfusion, it is important to make sure the donor and the recipient are as compatible as possible to avoid adverse immune response. The patient’s phenotype is A,N, Rh-.

a) List all GENOTYPES of potential donors with consideration of all three genes involved

b)  The Patient’s wife has phenotype B,M,Rh-, and clearly cannot be a donor. Pick possible genotypes for each parent, which are consistent with eth phenotypes, and will allow producing children that can donate blood to the father. Illustrate it using a Punnett square.

Answer #1

ABO blood groups are controlled by the gene I. The gene (I) has 3 alleles IA, IB and i. Each person possess any 2 of the three I gene alleles. Refer diagram 3, showing the genetic basis of blood groups in Human population.

a) The genotype of patient is AO - allele- IA i. The allele A (IA) dominant over allele i .

b) The genotype of patients wife is BO - allele- IB i. The allele B (IB ) dominant over allele i.

ABO blood grouping shows Co-dominance. It is a example of multiple alleles.

If phenotype A inherited from patient and phenotype B from patients wife then phenotype of children will be AB. The genotype of offspring will be IA IB .
