Answer #1

Answer to Q 12: Soils in high rainfall areas like tropics are red colored due to the presence of iron oxide in them. Such soils develop due to prolonged leaching of the elements like Ca+2, Mg+2, K+ which are exclusively dissolved in the rainwater and get leached down to the lower portions of the soils, hence are found in lower quantities in the lateritic soils. Elements like iron oxide are concentrated gradually. The process of dissolution of chemicals in the top layers is known as Eluivation while as the deposition of the eluviated materials is known as Illuviation.
