articularism is a belief, that is governed by the circumstances and priorities. It makes an individual act or practice something based on his relationship and trust on others, Instead of considering the general fact that relates to everyone in that realm of culture. In a prticularist culture, individual don't apply the general rulings and decision making based on professional or business goals, but he takes into account personal benefits/interest. For example: in a business organisation, a director would find few members as his favourite and reliable individuals. He prioritise them first for growth and development opportunities over other members. Performance and excellence is secondary in such a culture. Thus, he is said to be a particularist.

in this example, what are the problems that can happen if you always apply the particularist approach?

Answer #1

The particularistic approach says that each society goes through its historical development, which is based on its specific cultural and environmental context. In the above example, the director being a particularist has chosen his favourite and reliable individuals for growth and development opportunities. This indicates his biased judgement and favouritism towards a certain group, which neglects the other individuals in the organization. Furthermore, he is abusing his power to take such decisions for selecting the employees suitable for the growth and development opportunities. This kind of approach creates a negative atmosphere in the company that ignores the capabilities, performances and excellence of the employees. It encourages a biased organizational culture where equal opportunities of growth are not provided to the employees, rather the individuals favourite to the director get the chances. This would result in resentment amongst the employees who are deserving of the opportunities but not getting the opportunity. Furthermore, this resentment can reduce the productivity of the individuals, affect their morale and hamper performances in the company. Besides, employee turnover rate increases when they do not get equal opportunities despite having the required skills and knowledge. All this ultimately results in the negative culture and poor performance of the organization.

General Electric. Enron. Not two companies that you would expect to be mentioned in the same breath. After all, General Electric is repeatedly in the top of Fortune magazine's "Most Admired” companies, and Enron will go down in history as one of the greatest failures and financial scandals in U.S. corporate history. So why would we mention both of these firms together? Because the fact is that throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s, these companies actually approached their...
