Introduction The abundance of water in the Earth-atmosphere system is what makes Earth unique among the planets of our solar system. Moreover, water itself is a unique and dynamic substance. It can exist as a solid, liquid, and a gas at temperatures normally found on our planet. Water vapor (water in the gaseous state) is odorless, invisible, and tasteless, and the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is extremely variable: from as little as nearly zero in very cold air of the Arctic and Antarctic, to as much as four percent in the tropics. Meteorologists are interested in the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere because it is directly related to weather events such as rain and snow storms, and it also plays an important role in very destructive atmospheric phenomena like thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes.
