A section of U.S. highway with a posted speed limit of 70.0 mph (113 kph) has a curve of radius 1,170 ft (357 m). At what angle should the curve be banked so that cars travelling at the speed limit have no tendency to skid sideways?

Bank angle: ______________°

What if the road were on Mars? (Martian surface gravity is 3.71 m/s².) Assume the same coefficient of friction for a dusty road on Mars as for a wet road on Earth.

Answer #1

tan theta = v^2/rg

113 kph = 31.39 m/s

theta = tan^-1(v^2/rg) =

theta = 15.73 degree

part b )

at mars g = 3.71

theta = tan^-1(v^2/rg)

theta = 36.645 degree
