A negative position versus time graph means that the object is moving backwards for that perticular motion the graphs position should be negative and time should be positive. Which can be obtained only by taking the slope that is downward. If we look at the option C. Thats seems correct but it will give wrong answer because if we are considering only curve that is below horizontal axis then there is also a case in 3rd quadrant the time will be negative which is not possible.

Hence to obtain a negative position time axis should have positive value so the answrer is that downward slope will fulfill our requirements as slope = dx/dt.

Hence a downward slope will be negative and negative slope implies that the object is moving backwards.

So option D is the best suited and correct answer.
