Question
Easy problem

3. Two polarizing sheets have their transmission axes cross so no light can pass through. I place a third sheet in with it axes at an angle θ with respect to the first sheet. (a) Derive an expression for the intensity of transmitted light through all three sheets as a function of θ. (b) Find the angle for which the transmitted intensity is maximized? 4. Consider four polarizing sheets. The second, third and forth sheets make angles of 20, 50, and 90 degrees repectively with the axis of the first sheet. (a) What is the intensity of transmitted light? (b) How does this compare to problem 3 where the middle sheet is at 45 degrees.

When a beam of light passes through a pair of polarizing filters (polarizer and analyzer), the intensity of the transmitted light is a maximum when the transmission axes of the polarizer and analyzer are parallel to each other (θ = 0° or θ= 180°) and zero when the axes are perpendicular to each other (θ = 90°). For any value of theta between 0° and 90° the transmitted intensity is given by I = Ii cos2(θ) where Ii is the...

In Figure (a) below, unpolarized light is sent into a system of three polarizing sheets. The angles 01, 02, and 3 of the polarizing directions are measured counterclockwise from the positive direction of the y axis (they are not drawn to scale). Angles 01 and 83 are fixed, but angle 82 can be varied. Figure (b) gives the intensity of the light emerging from sheet 3 as a function of e2. (The scale of the intensity axis is not indicated.)...
