An operating characteristic of a waiting line is the probability that no units are in the system. During such a period, there is no activity and the entire serving system is idle. Should a manager be concerned if this probability is quite high (let's say, greater than 0.3)? For instance, such a description shows that a few customers benefit from the services of this organization.

Solution:

The manager has a role to play in managing the waiting systems or queuing systems. It is necessary that the customers requesting service are provided with quality service with maximum efficiency. This involves reducing the cost of customer service, reducing the number of complaints, increasing the quality of service and improving customer satisfaction. Thus it is necessary that the manager manages all the aspects related to customer service.

In the case above, the probability of idle time when greater than 30% should be a worry for the manager. Even if this scenario is producing a few happy customers it is not business pro to allow 30% and more idle time and increase the cost of waiting line system. The benefits received from such a waiting line are lower than the costs it comes with. Thus an idle time of more than 30% is bad for the business and managers should take actions to ensure that the waiting time is lower than 30% to maintain business requirements.
