Answer #1

Solution :

Given that ,

mean = \mu = 8.5

Using poisson probability formula,

P(X = x) = (e-\mu * \mu x ) / x!

a)

P(X < 7) = P(X=0) + P(X=1) + P(X=2) + P(X=3) + P(X=4) + P(X=5) + P(X=6)

P(X < 7) = (e-4.3 * 4.30) / 0! + (e-4.3 * 4.31) / 1! + (e-4.3 * 4.32) / 2! + (e-4.3 * 4.33) / 3! + (e-4.3 * 4.34) / 4! + (e-4.3 * 4.35) / 5! +(e-4.3 * 4.36) / 6!

P(X < 7) = 0.0136+0.0583+0.1254+0.1798+0.1933+0.1662+0.1191

P(X < 7) = 0.8558

Probability = 0.8558

b)

P(6<=X <= 8) = P(X=6) + P(X=7) + P(X=8)

P(6<=X < =8) = (e-4.3 * 4.36) / 6! + (e-4.3 * 4.37) / 7! + (e-4.3 * 4.38) / 8!

=0.1191+0.0732+0.0393= 0.2316

=0.2316

Probability = 0.2316
