Robert Selman is an American born educational psychologist and perspective taking theorist, who specializes in adolescent social development.

> He believed that role taking play in children promotes a more mature social understanding by teaching children to take on the roles if others, allowing them to uderstand that different people can have differing perspectives.

> In piaget's view, early cognitive development involves processes based upon actions and later progresses to changes in mental operations.

PIAGET'S STAGES OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT:

1. The sensorimotor stage ( birth to age 2 )

> Infants knows the world through their movements and sensations.

2. The preoperational stage (age 2-7)

> Children begin to think symbolically and learn to use words and pictures to represent objects.

3. The concrete operational stage (age 7-11)

> During this stage, children begin to thinking logically about concrete events.

4. The formal operational stage (12 and beyond)

> At this stage, the adolescent or young adult begins to think abstractly and reason about hypothetical problems.
