49.4-g golf ball is driven from the tee with an initial speed of 50.4 m/s and rises to a height of 20.5 m. (a) Neglect air resistance and determine the kinetic energy of the ball at its highest point. (b) What is its speed when it is 8.36 m below its highest point?

Answer #1

a)

max height

H = (v sin x) ^2 / 2g

20.5 = ( 50.4 sin x) ^2 / 19.6

x = 23.436 deg

kE at highest point

kE = 0.5m ( v cos x) ^2

kE = 52.817 J

=====

b)

velocity at the instant given

v' ^2 = (v cos x) ^2 + 2gh

v'^2 = (50.4 cos 23.436)^2 + 2 * 9.8* 8.36

v' = 47.981 m/s
