Answer #1

Given data:-

Beam effective depth (d) = 18"

Beam width (b) = 14"

Area of steel (As) = 4.68 in2

f'c = 5 ksi

fy = 75 ksi

Determine :- Cracked moment of inertia

Assumed modular ratio (n) = 9

We know that location of neutral axis of singly reinforced beam is given by as

brº/2 = nA, (d - 2) ----------------------------------Eq.1

Put all knowing data in Eq.1

14.22=9+4.68 * (18 - c)

7.c? = 758.16 - 42.12.r

7.x2 + 42.12.0 – 758.16 = 0

.+6.01.1 – 108.30 = 0

Solving above equation and calculeting  location of neutral axis (x)

T= 7.82inch

Location of neutral axis (x) = 7.82 inch

Cracked moment of inertia of singly reinforced beam is given by

Ic = bx/3 + nA (d ) ---------------------------------------Eq.2

Where b = 14"

n =9

  As= 4.68 in2

x = 7.82 inch

d = 18"

Put all data in Eq.2

Icr = 14 * 7.823/3+9* 4.68 * (18 – 7.82)

Ic = 2231.65 + 4364.99

Ic = 6596.64in   Ans.
