Answer #1

Henry Obookiah  was sent by his parents to a school in Connecticut run by Christian missionaries. The Foreign Mission School was an educational institute between 1817 and 1826 in Cornwall, Connecticut. The school’s first student was a Hawaiian refugee named Heneri Opukaha’ia, often anglicized as Henry Obookiah. This school was established by American Board of Commissioner for Foreign Missions to spread Christianity & Western tradition to Non-White people by giving education to missionaries of their own culture.

Henry Obookiah, first pupil of the school, was an 18 years old local Hawaiian abandoned in New Haven, Connecticut in 1810 by his ship. He traveled globally to promote the school, but died in Cornwall in 1818 at 26 before he could return to home.

From his founding, that educational institute quickly became a sign of U.S. Christianity's 2nd Great Awakening, and connected the low scale farm town of Cornwall in Connecticut's Litchfield Hills to the prior 19th century's clash of civilizations, as epitomized by the Trail of Tears, the conversion of Hawaii to Protestantism, and so, the worldwide Christian missionary movement. In 1807, when Captain Caleb Britnall took him aboard the Triumph, the teenage boy had his first English lessons on the journey to New Haven, Connecticut, in company with the Hawaiian servant Thomas Hopu.
