Describe the differences between prisons and jails?
The main difference between prisons and jail come fromt he period of stay of inmates in them.
Jails are run by local government authorities and have inmates waiting for a trial coming up soon or serving a short sentence of imprisonment. Jails organize boot camps educational programs and release programs for the inmates. These help in making the prisoners better people by working on productive areas and improving their lives. They work towards development in the prisoner such that he becomes a better person by the time he leaves such that he doesnt return for any of his acts. Such programs also help in keeping the inmates busy and not creating any problems inside the jail.
Prisons are operated by state government or Federal Bureau of Prisons and are for prisoners with heavier and more serious crimes. They hold prisoners for long term convinction. Their programs are based on the level of custody of the inmates. They are etter designed than jails for the needs of the inmates due to their long duration incarceration. With this reason the inmates prefer prison over jail and when face a repated visit will ask for stay in prison than in jail even if it is for a shorter period. Prisons provide better living conditions, better facilities and better availability of programs.
