Question

Measurement of the spectral, directional absorptivity of a certain non-reflecting surface shows that directional and spectral dependencies may be model as the product of two independent functions:

αλ, α(λ)α(Θ) α = 0.9 α=0.5 α(0) α(λ) α=0.1 α = 0 λ λ=1 μm θ θ=20° θ =70°

This surface is irradiated by diffuse blackbody radiation at a temperature of 5800 K. Note that the intensity of ideal radiation can be calculated at Ib= Eb/pi(W/m2 -sr). The surface is at a uniform temperature of 300 K.

Determine the rate that energy is absorbed by the surface (W/m2 )

Determine the net radiation heat flux to/from the surface (W/m2 ).

Note also that ape = 2,0.

As you can see the orientation is not given so I have to give the answer in function of angle but for standard vertical plate case I have given the answer you can apply the same steps to get answers for new orientations. Please forgive me for any calculation mistake and do comment for any short of queries.

12.62 Two plates, one with a black painted surface and the other with a special coating (chemically oxidized copper) are in earth orbit and are exposed to solar radiation. The solar rays make an angle of 30° with the normal to the plate. Estimate the equilibrium temperature of each plate assuming they are diffuse and that the solar flux is 1368 W/m2. The spectral absorptivity of the black painted surface can be approximated by αλ = o.95 foros λ oc...

A small object with an opaque, diffuse surface at a temperature of 500 K is suspended in a large furnace with walls at 2000 K. Assume that the walls of the furnace provide a diffuse irradiation to the object at a blackbody temperature equal to the furnace wall temperature. The object’s surface has a spectral hemispherical emissivity and absorptivity as given below. (a) Determine the total emissivity and total absorptivity of the object’s surface. Partial Ans: ?=0.021 (b) Evaluate the...

An unglazed flat plate solar water heater is orientated perpendicular to the sun such that the incident radiation reaching the plate is 1100 W/m2. The plate has a semi selective coating such that the plate absorptivity and emissivity is equal to unity for all wavelengths up to 2µm, and 0.13 for all λ > 2µm. Coolant flowing in the collector tubes removes heat at such a rate as to maintain the plate temperature at 80°C. Considering the sun to be...
