Why is Patricia Churchland so skeptical of Near-Death Experiences being indications of something beyond the brain. Do you agree or disagree? Be sure to back up your answer
Answer in 200 words
I agree with Patricia Churchland because for long it was thought that the brain and the soul were considered two distinct things. However, advancements in the scientific fields have proved it wrong by suggesting that everything that human beings conceive and do are through the nervous system and the brain and not by any of the external properties. This would mean that there are lots of new research going on about the human brain which separates the brain functions such as, memory, learning, aggression etc. by scientifically pinpointing the exact location of the function in the brain. Thus, the near-death experience could the temporary block in the nervous system and the brain in which the sensory perception ceases to work and as the result the heart might skip some beats. So, one cannot say that the near-death experience is beyond human physical elements. When people meet with accidents or when they have some severe attacks, they would feel as if they are gone for a while and that they cannot live anymore. But when they get back after the treatment, they would feel as if it’s a miracle in which they left their physical body and came back after an instance which is only their mind tricking them.
