Five gallons per minute of hot water at 180F and 20 psig is produced in a flow system by injection and condensation of low-pressure steam at 20 psig and 80% quality into cold water at 60F. The calculation basis is one minute. Calculate the steam mass flow rate in lbm/min; also calculate the exit pipe diameter if the velocity is to be maintained at 7ft/s.

How much energy does it take to heat up the water for your 20 minute shower?    The shower flow is 3 gallons per minute.    Cold water enters your house at 50 F.   Your hot water heater is set at 150 F and operates at an efficiency of 80%. You mix hot and cold water to attain the desired temperature of 100 F.

Your low-flow showerhead is delivering water at 1.1×10−4m3/s, about 1.8 gallons per minute. If this is the only water being used in your house, how fast is the water moving through your house's water supply line, which has a diameter of 0.021 m (about 3/4 of an inch)?

“A pipe is carrying hot water through a cold storage facility. The ambient air in the cold storage has temperature of ?5?C. To maintain uniform temperature in the cold storage, blowers installed in the facility induce a 3 m/s velocity to the cold air (which can be assumed to be flowing across the water pipe). Hot water inside the pipe has a mean velocity of 0.5 m/s. The internal and exter- nal diameter of the pipe are 8.4 cm and...

Hot water flows thorough a parallel flow heat exchanger at a rate of 10 kg/min and is cooled by a cold water stream of flow rate 25 kg/min. The inlet temperatures of hot and cold water streams are 70 oC and 25 oC, respectively. The outlet temperature of the hot water is expected to be 50 oC. The individual convective heat transfer coefficient on both sides of the heat transfer area is 600 W/m2 .K. Take the specific heat for...

Anaerobic water at 20 °C must be transported from one tank to an open container through a pipe with ID = 5.2 cm. Since N2 gas was used to make the water anaerobic, the plant decided to move the water by displacing it with N2 gas under pressure. The closed tank is connected to a gas tank that delivers a constant pressure of 40 psig at the tank gas phase. The exit pipe is 4.6 m above the tank exit...

The following diagram illustrates a simple steam power plant. A 10kg/s flow of liquid water at T1=25°C enters the pump at a pressure of P1=100kPa and is then pumped to a pressure of P2=2MPa. The boiler then heats the water at constant pressure to produce superheated vapour at T3=450°C. The steam is then expanded in the turbine to a final pressure of P4=100kPa. The turbine and pump are well insulated and may be considered reversible. a) Find the turbine exit...

L 2. Steady statemass balance: Water is flowing at steady state in a 0.1 meter-diameter pipe with a maximum velocity (turbulent profile) of 0.3 meters/sec. The pipe then goes through an expansion, to where it is then flowing in a 0.5 meter-diameter pipe, and the flow regime has changed from turbulent to laminar. In the second section of pipe, calculate the velocity as (a) block flow profile (Vavg), and (b) maximum velocity in laminar flow profile? HINT: you will need...
