The chi square tests are done for the following cases:

We do a test of standard deviation, whether it is more than, less than or equal to a particular value of hypothesized standard deviation value.
When we test the standard deviation or being more or less than a particular value, then it is a one tailed test ( as we test it from one side ) .

While when we test whether standard deviation is equal to a particular hypothesized standard deviation value, then we are testing it from both sides, that becomes a two tailed test.
Other uses of chi square tests are: We perform chi square test for goodness of fit of a particular distribution corresponding to a particular distribution.

Chi square test of independence is used to test whether the two variables are independent here.
