Given that,

a ) Degrees of freedom = df = 18

At 99% confidence level the t is ,

\alpha = 1 - 99% = 1 - 0.99 = 0.01

\alpha / 2 = 0.01 / 2 = 0.005

t\alpha /2,df = t0.005,18 = 2.898

The critical value = 2.90

b ) Degrees of freedom = df =91

At 98% confidence level the t is ,

\alpha = 1 - 98% = 1 - 0.98 = 0.02

\alpha / 2 = 0.02 / 2 = 0.01

t\alpha /2,df = t0.01,91 =2.368

The critical value =2.37
