Answer #1

In a sample of 256 men , 52 had elevated total cholestrol levels

In a sample of 234 women , 73 had elevated total cholestrol levels

We need to conclude that the proportion of men with elevated cholestrol levels is less than the proportion of women

Here p1 = proportion of men with elevated cholestrol levels

and p2 = proportion of women with elevated cholestrol levels

Stating Null and Alternative hypothesis

H0 : p1 >= p2

H1 : p1 < p2

The trick here is that first state the alternative hypothesis , which is present in the question itself , like ,here it is p1 < p2 . So , state it as alternative hypothesis . Then , think about the opposite of it i.e. p1 >= p2 . Here's one more trick , the equality sign should always present in the null hypothesis.

The hypothesis is Two - sample Proportion test , Two - proportion z-test, left - tailed test .
