How do the different types of power, used by leaders, affect employees of the organization?
Ans. Power is defined as the ability to exert influence on others. There are different types of power used by leadrers that affect the employees immensely.
1. Legitimate Power- This refers to the formal power and authority, that is legitimately granted to the leader under charter by the organization. And on the basis of this sanctioned, authorized, and exalted position of the leader, he has the right to direct employee behavior. The employees in turn have to follow the orders, and if they fail to do so, then they may face retribution. Also, an excessive usage of formal power by the leader can curb the motivation and creativity of their employees.
2. Reward Power- This involves the ability of the leader to withhold rewards such as money, privileges, promotion, or status. The objective determinations of rewards, reward schemes, and other communicated courses of action help to defuse arbitrary practices in the employment of reward power. So it is vital for the employees to value their work and the leader itself, in order to achieve good rewards.
3. Coercive power- This is predicated entirely upon fear as it makes the employees believe that they may be deprived of something, if they do not comply with the demands of the leader. The leader can make the employees deprived of their promotion, privileges, money, etc.
So, it is important for the employees and the leader to maintain a balance, so that both remain satisfied with their work and this will further lead to the organisation's success.
