You are a researcher at Nova Bank that has 100 branches across Canada, with a total of 100,000 clients and 2,000 employees.

The bank president shows you the CIBC Poll: Am I saving enough to retire? in which “an online survey was conducted among 1,523 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum panellists. The margin of error… is +/- 2.5%, 19 times out of 20.”

The bank president asks you to explain 4 ways of selecting a random sample of 2,000 from the list of 100,000 clients, for a similar Nova Bank poll on retirement savings.

The bank president also asks you to explain 3 ways of selecting a non-probability sample of 200 from the list of 2,000 employees for a qualitative survey on the challenges and opportunities for managers who are women and/or members of visible minorities to advance in the banking industry.

Explain each of the 3 non-probability sampling designs for this Nova Bank qualitative survey, and the advantages and disadvantages of each design. (0.5 notes, 1.5 applying the case,

Answer #1

1. Convenience Sampling:

(i) Method:

Step 1: Arrange the names of all the 2,000 employees in alphabetical order.

Step2: Select first 200 names from this list

(ii) Advantages:

The relative cost and time required in Convenience Sampling:are small.

It is very easy to carry out with few rules how the sample should be collected.

(iii) Disadvantages:

Convenience Sampling:suffers from sampling bias:Since the sample is selected from just alphabetical order without involing scientifically rigorous method, the sample may not be proper representative of the population.

2. Judgement Sampling

(i) Method:

Select 200 employees to be included in the sample from the population 2000 employess based on the researcher's own existing knowledge and his professional judgement.

(ii) Advantages:

The Judgement Sampling is very simple to adopt as it does not involve time consuming tedious statistical techniques.

If the researcher is well informed, Judgement Sampling can get a suitable sample.

(ii) Disadvantages:

Judgement Sampling is unscientific.

The sample selected is not representative of the population since it is selected based on judgement and not statistical methods.

Personalbias of the researcher cannot be neglected.

3. Quota sampling:

(i) Method:

Create a sample of 200 employees from the population of 2000 employees base on the researcher's knowledge of factors such as (i) gender, (ii) visible minorities to advance in the banking industry. andother relevant attribues so that proper representation is given to each factor.

(ii) Advantages:

Quota sampling ensures some degree of representativeness of all the strata of the population.

Quota sampling is cost effective. It can be used for researchers with limited budget.

(ii) Disadvantages:

Quota sampling does not allowrandom selection of participants.

Quota sampling increases the researcher bias since he might include employees whom he finds easy to approach and cooperative in nature.
