Morphine is one of the natural plant alkaloids found in opium. Latin binomial name of opium is Papaver somniferum.
Mechanism of action-
Morphine and its metabolites act as agonists of the mu and kappa opioid receptors. The mu-opioid receptor is integral to morphine's effects on the ventral tegmental area of the brain. Morphine's activation of the reward pathway is mediated by agonism of the delta-opioid receptor in the nucleus accumbens, while modification of the respiratory system and addiction disorder is mediated by agonism of the mu-opioid receptor. The net effect of morphine is the activation of descending inhibitory pathways of the CNS as well as inhibition of the nociceptive afferent neurons of the PNS, which leads to an overall reduction of the nociceptive transmission.
THC, also known as Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, is a psychoactive ingredient found only within the marijuana plant. The binomial name of Marijuana is Cannabis sativa.
Mechanisms of action- The psychoactive effects of THC are primarily mediated by the activation of cannabinoid receptors, which result in a decrease in the concentration of the second messenger molecule cAMP through inhibition of adenylate cyclase. These possess mild antioxidant activity sufficient to protect neurons against oxidative stress, such as that produced by glutamate-induced excitotoxicity.

1. What are three commercially available drugs that are based on natural compounds from plants. That could also be a medication that is chemically derived from a natural compound or compounds that were originally discovered in plants? (name, plant source, and physiological mode of action.) 2. Why do you think plants produce those medicinally active compounds, and what is the benefit to the plant?

During photosynthesis plants take in inorganic Co, and water converting them to organic compounds such as glucose. Glucose can be utilized to produce energy or become stored in the form of starch in different parts of the plant. Some scientists wanted to learning more about the transporting system of plants, so they labeled the carbon atoms in the Co, so that they can trace their path through the plant's body. Which part of the vascular tissue of the plant you...
