Question

olution containing a mixture of metal cations was treated with dilute HCl and no precipitate formed.

A solution containing a mixture of metal cations was treated with dilute and no precipitate formed. Next, was bubbled through the acidic solution. A precipitate formed and was filtered off. Then, the pH was raised to about and

was again bubbled through the solution. A precipitate again formed and was filtered off. Finally, the solution was treated with a sodium carbonate solution, which resulted in no precipitation.

Classify the metal ions based on whether they were definitely present, definitely absent, or whether it is possible they were present in the original mixture.

Answer #1

Qualitative analysis of metal cations

Adding HCl: no precipitate formed

Group I cations : Ag+, Pb2+, Hg2^2+ absent

Adding H2S: precipitate formed

Group II cations present: Sn4+, Cd2+, Sb3+, Hg2+

Raising pH to 8, and added H2S: precipitate formed

Group III cations present: Al3+, Ni2+, Mn2+

Added Na2CO3: no-precipitate formed

Group IV cations absent : Ba2+, Mg2+

So,

Definitely present

Sn4+, Cd2+, Sb3+, Hg2+

Mn2+, Ni2+

Definitely absent

Ag+, Hg2^2+, Pb2+, Ba2+, Mg2+

Possibly present

Al3+, K+
