The invention of the cotton gin made slavery indispensible to both the south and the north.

(Cotton and slavery owere highly inetertwined in the nineteenth-century economy. Eventhough ithe cotton gin reduced the labor of seed extraction,  it did not do away with the reduction for slaves for growing and picking the cotton. A scenario wmerged where cotton growing had become so profitable for the planters which led to high demand for both land and slave labor throughout America.)
