Answer #1

Answer : Type A, Type O

Explanation : Human has ABO blood type (A, B, AB, O) and Rh factor (Rh positive, Rh negative). The type of blood is also an inherited characteristic and depends upon the blood type of parents. In this case, the blood type of mother is A and the blood type of father is O. Rh factor isn't a topic to be discussed here.

A point to be noted first is that in ABO blood type, A and B genes are dominant and O gene is recessive. So, when A gene pairs with O, the phenotype will be of O, means the blood group will be O type. That in turn means that the mother with blood type A has the possibility of having AA gene or AO gene, in both of the cases the characteristics of A type will be expressed. Whereas, the father with blood type O will surely have the gene OO. As O is a recessive gene, it must be homozygous to be expressed phenotypically. OO gene of father will produce O gamete and it will cross with either A or O gamete of mother produced from either of the gene (AA or AO). The genes of parents, their respective gametes and the results after cross is described hereinafter...

Genes Gametes
OO (Father) O, O
AA (Mother) A, A
AO (Mother) A, O

There's a possibility of 2 types of crosses, one is OO×AA and another is OO×AO. Possible results of two crosses are as following...

Case 1 (OO×AA) :

Gametes A A
O AO AO
O AO AO

By analysing the results of above table it can be elucidated that when AA mother will have a baby with OO father, the gene of baby's blood type will be AO (100%). As A is dominant, the blood type of the baby in this case will be A.

Case 2 (OO×AO) :

Gametes A O
O AO AO
O OO OO

In this case, when the AO mother will have a baby with OO father there's is possibility of having 50% child with A blood type (AO gene) and 50% child with O blood type (OO gene).

Conclusion : Analysing the above mentioned results, it can be concluded that when a woman with A (AA or AO) blood type has a baby with a man who has type O blood (OO), the blood type of the baby can be either A (with AO gene) or O (with OO gene).
