In general graph directory structure, cycles are allowed within a directory structure where multiple directories can be derived from more than one parent directory.
The main problem with this kind of directory structure is to calculate total size or space that have been taken by the files and directories.

The below digram shows how the general graph directory looks like:

From the above figure, we can notice that the directory D9 and D10 are derived from the directories D3 and D4 respectively.

Advantages:

  • It allows cycles.
  • It is more flexible than other directories structure.

Disadvantages:

  • It is more costly than others.
  • It needs garbage collection.

When the same file exist in multiple directories, then on this condition cycles are formed.

When new directories are derived from existing directories, then cycles are generated.

Cycles are generated if we allow directories to appear in multiple places in the file system.

When multiple directories are linked up to each other, even then the cycle can occur.
