Using a frequency-measuring lab device, I am to map out the
sound intensity level distribution (dB) in a room
(both with & without music playing) to create a 5x5 grid of 25
data points.
Using the following data table of sound intensity level β(dB) and
corresponding intensity I(W/m2), I also need to find the
intensity to the nearest order of magnitude for the points on my
sound intensity level maps.
Here is the data table:
Intensity levelβ(dB) Intensity
I(W/m2) Example/effect
0 1×10–12 Threshold of hearing at 1000 Hz
10 1×10–11 Rustle of leaves
20 1×10–10 Whisper at 1 m distance
30 1×10–9 Quiet home
40 1×10–8 Average
home
50 1×10–7 Average office, soft music
60 1×10–6 Normal conversation
70 1×10–5 Noisy office, busy traffic
80 1×10–4 Loud radio, classroom lecture
My question is how do I determine the sound intensity level (in dB) and intensity (W/m2)? To do these calculations, I need to take into account the frequencies that I measure throughout the room as well as the dimensions of the room, correct? I am not sure which equations to use to get from frequency to dB. Thanks in advance for any help in understanding this material!

Miranda is measuring the sound intensity level for a speaker by holding a sound level meter. The intensity of the sound wave at her location is 2.6e-07 W/m2. (a) What is the sound intensity level (SIL) recorded on the meter at Miranda's location? i got the answer of 54.14dB (b) The volume of the speaker is turned down until the intensity of the sound being produced decreases by a factor of 150. 9. Sound levels are measured by the logarithmic decibel scale, named after Alexander Graham Bell. The sound level, L, corresponding to an intensity of I, in watts per square metre, is し= 10 log-, where lo is the minimum intensity audible to the human ear. If amplified rock music has a loudness of 120 dB and ordinary conversation has a loudness of 50 dB, how many times louder than ordinary conversation is amplified rock music? 9. Sound levels are measured...
Suppose we measure a sound intensity of 1 W/m2. What sound intensity level (SIL) in dB does this correspond to?
The decibel scale is a logarithmic scale for measuring the sound intensity level. Because the decibel scale is logarithmic, it changes by an additive constant when the intensity as measured in W/m2 changes by a multiplicative factor. The number of decibels increases by 10 for a factor of 10 increase in intensity. The general formula for the sound intensity level, in decibels, corresponding to intensity I is β=10log(II0)dB, where I0 is a reference intensity. For sound waves, I0 is taken...
