Pink eye is a condition, where, the outer mucous covering of the eye, known as the conjunctiva gets inflamed. It can result from bacterial or viral infection. One of the most common bacteria that causes pink eye is Haemophilus influenzae. The bacteria normally infects upper respiratory tract and can also infect eyes and ears. Pink eye can also result from contact with infected surfaces, such as, contaminated hands, contact lenses, etc, or through air droplets. The infected eye swells and becomes red, pus is discharged from the eyes, and there is itchiness and pain.
