Answer #1

Since , the population varinaces are equals.

Therefore , use pooled varinace t-test.

Now , df=degrees of freedom=n1+n2-2=14+10-2=22

The pooled estimate of standard deviation is ,

S_{p}=\sqrt{\frac{(n_1-1)s_1^2+(n_2-1)s_2^2}{n_1+n_2-2}}=\sqrt{\frac{(14-1)38^2+(10-1)42^2}{14+10-2}}=39.6851

The null and alternative hypothesis is ,

H_0:\mu_1-\mu_2=0

H_a:\mu_1-\mu_2>0

The test is right-tailed test.

The test statistic is ,

t_{stat}=\frac{\bar{X_1}-\bar{X_2}}{S_{p}\sqrt{\frac{1}{n_1}+\frac{1}{n_2}}}=\frac{196-187}{39.6851*\sqrt{\frac{1}{14}+\frac{1}{10}}}=0.548

The p-value is ,

p-value=P(t_{df}>|t_{stat}|)=P(t_{22}>0.548)=0.2946 ; The Excel function is , =TDIST(0.548,22,1)
