Answer #1

Motivation to work is influenced by Management. I disagree that motivation is solely dependent on the individual.

In order for the employee to be motivated enough to continue their work daily, there are several employment benefits that they should be receiving from the management. They are as follows:

  1. Reasonable Financial Remuneration.
  2. Provisions for promotions.
  3. Recognition for hard work and discipline.
  4. Job Security.
  5. Retirement benefits.
  6. Good behaviour of the authorities towards the employee.
  7. Healthy work environment with no stress.
  8. Unity among employees.

The main motivator for any employee to work is the monetary benefits. But sometimes it is not enough. Each person is different. One is hard headed, one is agreeable, one is a rebel and one is incapable of taking their own decisions. Each employee performance varies depending on their behaviour. The management should observe employee behaviour around the workplace, analyse their strengths and weaknesses and prepare a custom motivational strategy for each individual. Team leaders must enforce these strategies and observe how the performance displayed by their respective teams have improved or worsened.

I am currently working in the Private sector. A few months ago, the Management had released a bonus plan for the employees that allowed them to earn up to $20,000 for each extra task they achieved over their daily targets. The monetary benefit given here was so good that every employee was striving towards doubling their targets by the end of the day to receive maximum benefits. But that plan was only temporary and they removed it after a couple of months. I began to notice a drastic change in performance. My team members were barely working. The management then used scare tactics to force them to work. Threatening to replace them with new staff. This forced the employees to give their targets for the day, however it left a certain awkwardness between the team leaders and the employees under their team.

In the above illustration, the management played a key role in motivating the employees and also an even more important role in demotivating them.

Every company's bread and butter is its employees. In order for them to make profits, they need to ensure the physical and mental health of each of its employees. The better their employees perform, the more profits they earn, it's simple as that.

Motivation is solely done through Positive Reinforcements:

Positive reinforcement is a behaviour modification strategy used by employers on their employees by frequent observation and remarks on the employees' daily work performance. If the employee is working very hard and reaching their targets daily, The employer thanks them, provides them with non-monetary benefits for their sincere efforts and other such positive encouragement to the employee so that they stay motivated to provide maximum production consistently. The opposite of this is Negative reinforcement.

And lastly, despite everything a management can do in some work places, it is very hard to motivate people to work for the benefit of the organization. And hence, the best motivation the management can provide is monetary incentives and bonuses and tell the employees to work for themselves so that they can earn a lot more.
