I’m trying to determine whether a new drug therapy effectively treats the new coronavirus. I hastily try to design a study, recruiting people know who have the virus, and giving the drug to the younger participants. After three weeks, I conclude based on my work that the therapy was effective. In addition to not abiding by proper experiment protocol, it turns out (unbeknownst to me) that the therapy is a placebo: it does nothing useful. And yet I have concluded that it is effective. What type of error did I make: Type I, or Type II?
