Citizen registration and voting varies by age and gender. The following data is based on registration and voting results from the Current Population Survey following the 2012 election. A survey was conducted of adults eligible to vote. The respondents were asked in they registered to vote. The data below are based on a total sample of 760. We will focus on the proportion registered to vote for ages 18 to 24 compared with those 25 to 34. The expectation is that registration is lower for the younger age group. The data are given below.
Age | Registered | Not Registered | Total | |
---|---|---|---|---|
18 to 24 | 52 | 45 | 97 | |
25 to 34 | 83 | 42 | 125 | |
35 to 44 | 86 | 35 | 121 | |
45 to 54 | 104 | 37 | 141 | |
55 to 64 | 100 | 29 | 129 | |
65 to 74 | 66 | 17 | 83 | |
75 and over | 50 | 13 | 63 | |
Total | 541 | 218 | 759 |
We conduct a difference of proportion test between persons 18 to 24 minus persons 25 to 34, where the null hypothesis is that the difference is zero. The test statistic is -1.9365. Based on an alpha level of .05 for a one-tailed test where the proportion for those 18 to 24 is lower, you can conclude that there is a significant difference.
True
False
Since the p value for z = - 1.9365 is 0.026373.
The result is significant at p < .05.
( since 0.026373 < 0.05 so we reject the null hypothesis and accept alternate hypothesis that proportion of 18 - 24 is lower )

A gubernatorial candidate wants to analyze how she is performing with different age groups. Her campaign staff surveyed 150 random constituents in the 18–24 age range and 175 constituents in the 65+ age range. Of those constituents, 67 of the people 18–24 years old and 90 of the people 65+ years old said they planned on voting for the candidate for governor. Find the lower bound of the 99% confidence interval for the difference in population proportions of people 18–24...
Are gender and age-associated with each other for emergency room visits? Do a chi-squared test for the following. Please report the expected counts as a matrix. Also, is this a test of independence or not? Make the 4 steps cleared as outlined on page 325 of your textbook. The following data represent the gender of 489 randomly selected patients who visited the emergency room with an injury-related emergency.
