a target gets hit with an arrow moving at velocity=550m/s and sticks in completely.
the mass of the target is 3.50kg and arrow weighs 20kg
the target is attached to a spring with spring constant k=200N/m
friction can be ignored
target is initially at rest

1) what is the max displacement of the target from after thr collision

2) what % of kinetic energy was converted into non mechanical forms of energy

Answer #1

Although the question seems wrongly framed as the mass of arrow is given 20kg whereas the mass of target is given 3.5kg only. But still solving for the given values in the question

final energy = ₂ (mitm2) o u² = x 29.5x (468.085) = 2574.467 kJ % change = 3025-2574.467x100 3025 14.89%

A target with mass m=3.5 kg is attached to a spring constant k=200 N/m on a horizontal, frictionless surface. The target is struck by a bullet with mass of 20 g, traveling at a speed of v=550 m/s. Bullet embeds itself completely into target. Assuming that the target is initally at rest, what is maximum displacement of the tagret fromthe spring equilbrium position after collision? Assume instant collision occurs. What percent of initial kinetic energy converted to non-mechanical forms of...
