We recently saw where hackers compromised many popular Twitter accounts to send out bogus offers of free cash.
How did the hackers gain access to the accounts? What was Twitter’s response? Is Twitter to blame for this? What more could they have done to prevent this?

As per the official response from Twitter the hackers used internal tools which are used by Twitter employees only , to reset teh account password and gain access to the account.
Twitter instantly , blocked many accounts with blue tick to tweet and also blocked password change request for many accounts.Also the msg tweeted by the hackers were removed.
Yes , as far as security is concerned twitter is to blame , providing access to internal employees with internal tools without making sure the secuirty of those tools and properly educating the employees about the damages it can incur , led to this hack ,
Twitter could have established a proptocol where even the internal tools without some higher authority approval can access the account, this would have made sure that th eployees having access to such tools also need approval from authorities.
